Considered by many as the world's most scrumptious pastry,
these heavenly flavored sweets were introduced to the world
by the Assyrians around the 8th century BC. A base of savory
pistachio nuts coated in honey and smothered in clarified
butter layered between thin sheets of dough known as "phyllo"
results in the mouth watering treat. Variations of the rich
dessert include Baklawa, Assabeh, Balaurieh, Bassma, Borma,
Kolshkor, Mafroukeh, Malakieh, Swar and Wardeh. Rose water
and orange blossom are two of the various essences used to
enhance the exotic flavors of these most luscious pastries.
Adopted and adapted by the Greeks, the Armenians, the Turks
and even the Romans, phyllo pastries have graced the tables
of some of history's most famous figures.
